CHAPTER 30

LIKE SO MANY OTHER THINGS IN MAMIE TEATH’S LIFE, HER FUNERAL WAS MINIMAL. Her husband, daughter, and son-in-law buried her quietly in Staten Island where she’d lived in near seclusion all her life. She was finally interred on Monday morning nearly a week after she passed away. Annie sent flowers. So did Brian. Throughout the weekend, Annie had called Carol a number of times. Carol hadn’t wanted to churn up the family waters, and didn’t want to talk. She’d changed her mind once again and decided to keep the peace by sticking with her father, and reconciling with Matthew. Matthew wasn’t speaking to Annie because she was married to Ben, so Annie wasn’t invited to the funeral. She’d brooded about it all weekend and all day. Carol had banished her because she didn’t want trouble. She’d let her mother be buried without asking a single difficult question. It was so sad.

Just before the bell ended the day at the stock exchange, Brian came into her office. “Annie, you seem down. Want to come over and give me some decorating advice?”

Brian had asked her this a hundred times. She’d always said no. Today she said, “Sure.”

Half an hour later she was in Brian’s office with her purse slung over her shoulder. The phone rang. It was the last call of Brian’s day, and instead of leaving, he grabbed it.

“Brian Redfield.” He listened for a minute, then glanced at Annie and hit SPEAKERPHONE. “Dr. Teath, let me convey my condolences,” he murmured. Teath didn’t let him get any further.

“That girl stole my bearer bonds.” Dr. Teath’s voice came out loud and ferocious.

“This is Brian Redfield,” Brian said smoothly.

“I know who it is. I received your so-called statement. It’s bullshit,” came the angry reply.

“What’s the problem?”

“I told you. My bonds are gone. I want them back.”

It was cool in the office. The market was closed, and the day was over. Annie’s forehead beaded with sweat. She’d known it wouldn’t go away. She’d told Brian it wouldn’t go away.

“Ah, Dr. Teath, we’ve recorded and deposited all of your wife’s securities.”

“Not all of them. I keep meticulous notes. I know what I had. I’m going to report you to the NASD. I’m going to take your company down,” Teath threatened.

“Dr. Teath, four people documented the contents of the package that arrived at our office. Everything was duly recorded and deposited in your late wife’s account. I personally supervised the process.” He winked at Annie.

“Bullshit. It was stolen. I’m going to report you to Eliot Spitzer, too. I’m going to send that thief to jail.”

Brian’s voice remained as smooth as satin. “Can you give us documentation, serial numbers of the bonds in question?”

“What are you talking about? I know what I had. I know over a quarter of a million dollars is missing. Your young woman stole it.”

Brian’s expression sobered. “That is a very serious allegation,” he said after a moment.

“You bet it is, and I want my money back. I can see what’s happening here.
